Late last night (or in the evening if you’re American), Sony held their press conference at E3 for the revelation of the PS4 which is due to be released ‘in the holidays.’ Within the conference, Sony showcased over 40 new games, explained the revolution of Playstation Plus, issued some ‘Anti-Xbox’ propaganda and of course revealed what the PS4 will look like.
After a lot of speculation that Sony made a mistake not showing the PS4 at the previous conference and worries that this would be the only card Sony have to play at E3, they finally revealed the PS4 and here it is:
Pictured is the PS4 console itself, the newly designed controller and the new ‘EyeToy.’ Despite its simple design and likeness to a cross between the PS2 and PS3, I actually quite like it. It doesn’t need to look complicated. The only thing I would criticise is that I am wondering why Sony still produce Tower Type consoles…Just lay the damn thing flat!!
I am a big fan of PS+, and I am glad that Sony have announced its continuation into PS4 and there emphasis that the Instant Game Collection would be continued, again highlighted by 3 new releases scheduled for today! On a negative note, (for some) online play will only be capable to PS+ Subscribers, and although this seems like a money making kick-in-the-nuts, I would expect Sony to invest this revenue into their servers making them more responsive and stable, bringing them up to speed with XboxLive, but then this has already been proven by the introduction of Gaikai’s cloud streaming service- it would have to be powerful! Again, I would expect more important titles to be released on the Instant Game Collection also.
A big criticism behind the Xbox One would be it’s used games policy. I think Microsoft care more about profit than the fans when it comes to the Xbox. Forcing them to pay subscription fees for so long just to play online. Yes, Sony are following suit, but for the same price they have offered so much more for so long. Sony have announced that there will be no ‘used game policy’ for PS4, which means, when you buy a game, its yours, you can play it at home, on a friends PS4, you can sell it, trade it in, hell you can mix it up and eat it for dinner if you wanted, the point is, Sony aren’t restricting anything!
Also revealed, was the price of the console. Now before I say anything, I think the fact their conference showed later than Xbox had an impact on their price. I think their aim was to just ‘undercut Xbox’ at any cost, of course Sony aren’t afraid to sell a console at a loss, proven with PS3. Once the PS4 has been released, the PS4 will cost a sound £349/$399. What a great price!
The previous 2 revelations are a big kick in the teeth for Microsoft and I think all of their hearts sunk once Sony had revealed this trolling information, it was almost a response to Microsoft.
The boxes that the games would come in was also shown, very much like the PS2 boxes, but, a lighter blue? Not much innovation there, and I think I will actually miss the box the PS3 games came in, but meh, no biggy!
Sony also announced there would be an exclusive PS3+GTA5 bundle. Now, by then, the PS3 will be old, but I think they just wanted to announce that they had a partnership with Rockstar and threw this in for free marketing. There will also be a GTA5 style headset.
Now all of this becomes pretty irrelevant if you have nothing to do on your newly owned Playstation 4. Sony have announced over 50 Titles for the PS4 and I’m sure many more are to come, here they are, (The ones with a * are PS4 exclusive)
Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag
Call of Duty: Ghosts

There are some amazing games there, and Sony have announced partnerships with The Elder Scrolls Online, Rockstar and GTA5, and Destiny which as you will agree are all blockbusters!
Sony also pledged commitment to the Indie Game Developers out there and they announced 9 titles from just that sector of publishing:
‘Transistor,Secret Ponchos, Ray’s The Dead, Galak-Z, Octodad: Dadliest Catch, Oddworld: Abe’s Oddysee – New ‘n’ tasty, Outcast, Mercenary Kings, Don’t Starve.
Wow! I’m breathless, what an amazing revelation to what the next 6 or 7 years of gaming will bring to us. I am genuinely excited.
